You Are Here: Home » Installing and setting up, Troubleshooting » Why don’t the student computers show in the InterCLASS Teacher Console after I install InterCLASS?

Please follow these instructions to check for InterCLASS connectivity:

A. Checking the Student program (is ICClient.exe running on the Task Manager?)

  1. Start the Task Manager (Right click on the Task bar, and then choose “Task Manager”).
  2. Open the Task Manager, and then select the Processes tab.
  3. Click the “Show processes from all users” button (for Win 7).
  4. Find “ICClient.exe” in the processes list (You can click the “Image Name” to show the list in alphabetical order to find it).
  5. If it is not listed, the student program is not installed or failed during installation. Please try reinstalling the student program. If it doesn’t work, please contact technical support.
  6. If it is running OK, please open the Add Student PCs dialog and then double check if the computer names are listed in the Available PCs list. If you can find the student computer names, just add them to the class. If you cannot find them even if the ICClient.exe is running on each student computer, go to these next steps.

B. Checking the network connections:

  1. Network Cards – Check to see if you have two or more Network Cards (NIC) on the teacher computer.
For example, if you enable both the wireless LAN connection and the wired LAN connection on your laptop, please disable the one that is not on the same network as the students. Please also make sure that the LAN cable is connected to the computers properly. If this is OK, got to next step:
  2. Firewalls – Make sure that there are no personal firewalls blocking InterCLASS. The InterCLASS installer automatically configures for the Windows Firewall, but it doesn’t configure any third party firewall that typically comes with Anti-Virus software. Disable all personal firewalls and those from Anti-Virus software for testing purposes. If this is not the reason, then please go to the next step.
  3. VLAN – Make sure that the teacher and student computers are on the same VLAN (subnet). If they are on different VLANs, then InterCLASS cannot communicate properly between the teacher and student PCs. If it is difficult to include the classroom computers to the same VLAN, please configure InterCLASS to the TCP mode, then the teacher console will be able to connect to the student computers across different VLANs.
  4. Wireless Access Point – If you are using a Cisco wireless access point for your classroom, it could blocks InterCLASS traffic by default. Multicast traffic on some older Cisco access points is usually disabled and there could also be a port protection policy that blocks peer-to-peer traffic. These settings will need to be configured to allow for InterCLASS communication. Please contact our tech support and tell your access point model name, then we will let you know the best configuration for your wireless access point (Usually, we ask to do this configuration).
